Retiring Chairman of Trustees John Gilchrist celebrations

Many thanks to retiring chairman of trustees John Gilchrist

The Board of Trustees of the British Commercial Vehicle Museum are pictured with former Chairman of Trustees John Gilchrist who retires as a trustee after 40 years’ service. The museum, located in Leyland, dates back from the 1930’s when it formed part of the South Works of the Leyland Bus & Truck company. In 1983 the building was transformed into a museum.

Too cold to open to the public in winter months and with the roof frequently in need of repair, John led a successful Heritage Lottery Funding bid, assisted with generous support from sponsors to transform the Museum to a World class 21st Century facility containing many historical and priceless exhibits charting the evolution of commercial trucks and buses.

John, a former Chairman and Chief Executive of Leyland Trucks, had over 30 years with the Leyland Group. Leading the management buyout of the Truck Company following the failure of its parent in 1993, he led the establishment of Leyland Trucks Ltd returning the company to profitability. John retired in 1998 following the sale of Leyland Trucks to the PACCAR Group.

John is also a Liveryman of the Worshipful Company of Carmen and a Freeman of the City of London.

John is pictured with the trustees in front of his favourite vehicle in the museum, which hails from his home city of Edinburgh.

Happy retirement and many thanks John!
